Mandy’s under appreciated gem

A picture speaks volumes. Home made pastries, decent coffee, and newspapers that don’t look like they’ve just been used to mop up this mornings’ spill. And all for a not-unreasonable price. Often missed by a high-end crowd focused on table dining at adjacent Cafe Causette, forget that: just plop yourself down at a chair on the counter in line of sight of all those cakes, and be a tad assertive. The perfect place for a pit stop on a late Saturday morning. Mandarin Cake Shop

Cafe RuNam, Vietnam

This two story gem in the heart of downtown Ho Chi Minh is to die for. Elegant French, and classy at that. One just wants to use this as a base to write the next novel. Cafe RuNam

New Starbucks concept in HK

Indeed. Yes. Absolutely. Starbucks Reserve is a cynical attempt to get a jump on the rapidly growing high-end coffee segment. But the urban minimalist concrete cool of this new Wanchai branch is great. It’s enough to make us emerging oldies feel cool just being here. Hosted on a walk up, the counter is spacious and frankly once one bypasses the standard latte cup aka milk shake menu, the new Reserve range is pretty good, and the pour over precisely delivered by a well trained staff. Talking of which, for those wishing to quit their day jobs, the Starbucks training centre is right upstairs. Starbucks Reserve Wanchai
